The Ceres Cowboys played host to the Modesto Titans on Thursday. The varsity football teams scrimmaged for an hour and a half at Mae Hensley Jr. High School.

"We played a little scared and that's what I don't like," said Ceres coach Tom Vasquez. "We're going to work on that."

Ceres struggled on offense and defense during its 42-0 loss to Modesto.

The Cowboys failed to mount a successful drive against the Titans thanks in part to a host of mistakes.

Their offensive line committed several false starts and allowed a handful of sacks.

Their quarterback and running backs fumbled.

Their quarterback also threw an interception.

"It was a learning experience," Vasquez said.

Ceres couldn't slow down Modesto's rushing attack.

The Titans scored seven rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback Michael Harrison accounted for Modesto's fifth score. He ran over a defender and broke several tackles en route to a 50-yard TD run. Harrison taunted several of Ceres' players with a lengthy celebration in the end zone.

"That's one thing I didn't like," Vasquez said. "I don't know if you get penalized for that in their league but you do in ours."

Ceres and Modesto won't play against each other during the season.

The Cowboys are a member of the Delta Youth Football League, which is based out of Stockton.

The Titans are a member or the All-American Youth Football Conference, a 10-team league, which is based out of Sacramento.

Jamboree Day

On Sunday, Ceres participated in Jamboree Day at Lincoln High School in Stockton. All 18 teams from the DYFL were in attendance.

The Cowboys scrimmaged against several teams within the organization.

Season opener

The Cowboys open the season against the Stockton Bengals at Ceres High School on Aug. 29.

"We've got two weeks before our first game," Vasquez said.
