Members of the Ceres High varsity boys basketball team filed out of the Grace Davis High gymnasium and headed for the bus after losing 58-46 to an undersized Los Banos squad on Saturday.
"You're not going to win games scoring 17 points in a half at the varsity level," said Ceres senior guard/forward Charlie Cunha.
Cunha finished with a team-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers, sophomore Kevin Dupree scored 11 points and DaAron added seven points for Ceres, which compiled a 1-2 record in a field of four at Modesto City Tournament.
"We sucked," Cunha said. "We didn't play good at all. We didn't play as a team."
James Bass had a game-high 22 points, including three 3-pointers, Eleazer Jones scored 15 points and Gary Lowe added nine points for Los Banos.
The Tigers shot 46 percent (6-for-13) from the field in the third quarter and 77 percent (13-for-17) from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Ceres shot just 21 percent (7-for-33) from the floor and 33 percent (3-for-9) from the foul line in the second half.
Down 40-36, the Bulldogs managed to make just 3 of 18 shots in the final quarter.
"We shot horrible," Cunha said.
The Bulldogs would have held a double-digit lead at halftime if they finished around the basket.
"Instead of being up by 12, we're tied at half," said Ceres coach Jason Martin. "We missed nine shots in the key."
Each team scored 26 points in the first half.
Ceres center Zack Wiedenbeck made a layup with eight seconds remaining to lead the Bulldogs past the Oakdale Mustangs, 60-57, on Friday.
Wiedenbeck scored a game-high 18 points, Ross Tate had 16, and DaAron Grays, Kevin Dupree and Derrick Goblirsch added eight, seven and five, respectively, for Ceres.
Dupree, Rafael Valencia and Tate scored 10, nine and seven points, respectively, for Ceres in losing 58-48 to Atwater on Thursday.
