Water Dawgs win one of two

Modesto High defeated the Ceres High girls water polo team 18-4 on Thursday in Ceres.

"It wasn't a pretty game," said Ceres coach Lesley Willems. "They capitalized on our mistakes."

Lauren Griffin scored three goals for the Bulldogs (1-1). Sarah Pullum had one goal. Goalie Amber Allen blocked eight shots.

Seven players scored for the Panthers (1-0). Catrina Gallardo had a game-high five goals. Kasey Reed, Julia Crain and Annie Benich each added three goals. Rachel Wiley tallied two goals. Kasia Hetnal and Karoline Palmer both had one goal.

Modesto High led 9-3 at the break.

The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 9-1 in the second half.

"I think we should have played much better than we did," Willems said. "It's not an unattainable goal to beat them. Everyone has to be on the same page."

Dawgs top Patriots in overtime

Ceres High won its league opener on Tuesday, Sept. 13 in Modesto. The Bulldogs beat Beyer 10-9 in overtime.

"It was a good win," Willems said. "They all played really well."

Griffin scored a team-high five goals. Katie Griffith added three goals. Sam Walters and Sarah Willems both tallied one goal. Allen had seven saves.

Down 6-5, Walters scored the game-tying goal in the closing seconds of regulation.

The Bulldogs outscored the Patriots 4-3 in overtime. Griffith scored three times. Griffin scored once.
