Coach Sonja Raynes didn't want to embarrass the other team. She emptied her bench and made sure her players stopped capitalizing on counter attacks in the second half.
"If they didn't follow directions, they got taken out," she said.
The Ceres High boys water polo team scored 14 goals in the first half in defeating Downey 20-1 in Ceres on Thursday.
The Bulldogs worked on set plays during the final 14 minutes of play.
"It's always good to win but you really need to gain something out of it besides demoralizing a team," Raynes said.
Added Ceres junior Joey Rossi: "We didn't want to run up the score. We wanted to keep the match friendly."
The second-place Bulldogs improved to 7-2 in the Modesto Metro Conference.
The Knights fell to 0-9 in the league standings.
All of Ceres' players scored.
Rossi led the way with four goals, including three in the first quarter.
Eric Scudder and Cody Frampton each had three goals. Scudder scored twice in the first quarter. Frampton scored twice in the second quarter.
Kyle Fliflet, Mike Polovin and Jason Weststeyn each had two goals.
Markus Richter, Vitaly Polovin, Derek Stanhope and Justen Harper all scored once.
Harper made six saves in goal.
The Bulldogs outscored the Knights 10-0 in the opening quarter.
"It's fun but I'd rather have it be close," Scudder said. "I like competition."
Dawgs take third
The Bulldogs finished third in a field of eight with a 3-1 at the Rocklin Thunder Boys Water Polo Tournament, held at Rocklin High School on Friday and Saturday.
Ceres won its final three games.
"Everything started to fall into place after the second game," Raynes said.
The Bulldogs beat Armiijo and McClatchy on Saturday and Roseville on Friday.
They lost their first game to Reno, the tournament champion, on Friday.
