Youth athletes compete at Western Championships

Approximately 16 teams, including more than 250 athletes, vied for trophies, medals and ribbons at the USA Gymnastics, Sports Acrobatics 2004 Western United States Championships in Livermore this past weekend.

The Ceres AcroGymnastics team brought home a host of awards.

"We pretty much duplicated what we had done at state," said Ceres coach Ron Osoria. "We won Level 8 & 6 titles."

Ceres also earned 30 medals and coach and athlete of the year honors.

Ceres' coaching staff was recognized for the sixth year in a row. Ron, Susan and Kimberly Osoria and Al and Marsha Silva won the Region I Junior Olympic Coaches of the Year Award.

"That's based on the performances of all of our athletes through state," Ron said.

Brandon Fletcher, Dylan Barrett, Ariel Davidson, Gisele Villegas, Erin Barrett, Derek Chisamore and Steven Walker claimed gold medals.

Fletcher and Dylan placed first in the Level 6 Men's Pair Division. They were also named USA Gymnastics, Sports Acrobatics Region I Junior Olympic Pair/Group of the Year.

"That's the third time in four years we have had athletes of the year," Ron said.

"They were deserving of the award. They took first at four local meets, first at state and first at regionals."

Davidson, Villegas and Erin Barrett placed first in the Level 8 Women's Trio Division.

Chisamore and Walker placed first in the Level 8 Men's Pair Division.

Alison Cardenas, Holly Goodrum, Ariana Stevens, Brandy Costa, Kyndel Fletcher, Amber Autrand, Emily Hammerstein, Dora Cantu, Keirsha Girouard, Melissa Wartan, LeighAnn Barton, Jamie Beck, Autumn Faccinto, Kassondra Hohstadt and Mikayla Faccinto claimed silver medals.

Cardenas, Goodrum and Stevens placed second in the Level 8 Women's Trio Division. They scored 17.367 in the balance routine.

"They earned the second highest score of the entire competition," Ron said.

Costa and Fletcher placed second in the Level 8 Women's Pair Division.

Autrand, Hammerstein and Cantu placed second in the Level 7 Women's Trio Division.

Girouard and Wartan placed second in the Level 7 Women's Pair Division.

Barton, Beck and Autumn placed second in the Level 6 Women's Trio Division.

Hohstadt and Mikayla placed second in the Level 6 Women's Pair Division.

Emily Silva, Stephanie Osoria, Jenna Geer, Megan Simmons, Alyssa Gardner, Ashleigh Stearns, Sarah Humphres and Kassandra Contreras claimed bronze medals.

Silva, Osoria and Geer placed third in the Level 9 Women's Trio Division.

Simmons, Gardner and Stearns placed third in the Level 9 Women's Trio Division.

Humphres and Contreras placed third in the Level 6 Women's Pair Division.

Megan Alvarado, Jessica Castillo and Sharon Montes received ribbons after placing fourth in the Level 8 Women's Trio Division.

Regionals served as preparation for the 2004 Sports Acrobatics National Championships, to be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center, July 24-31.

All 33 of Ceres' athletes earned qualifying scores to nationals at the state competition.
