Damon Flores added to his boxing resume this past month when he claimed his 14th national championship.
The 2025 Cesar Chavez Jr. High grad placed first at the USA Boxing National Junior & Youth Golden Gloves of America Tournament of Champions.
The event was staged July 10-13 at Camp Jordan Arena in Tennessee.
“I knew I could do it,” said Flores, 15. “I’m happy. I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress since I first started.”
Flores won both of his fights in the 125-pound Male 15-to-16-year-old Open Division at the National Junior & Youth Golden Gloves Tournament.
Flores received a first-round bye because he was the top seed.
He topped Virginia’s William Chavez in the finals and Georgia’s Xavier Collins in the semifinals.
Flores earned three-standing eight counts versus Collins and one against Chavez.
“I was boxing smart,” he said. “I didn’t make any mistakes.”
“He did as expected,” father/trainer Damian Flores added.
Flores won national titles in two different weight classes in a two-month span.
He took first with a 4-0 record in the 119-pound Junior Male 15-16-year-old Division at the 2025 USA Boxing Junior Olympics and Summer Festival, staged June 14-21, at the Las Vegas Convention Center
Flores improved his overall record to 90-12.
“He’s stayed grounded, driven and focused,” noted Damian Flores. “He’s constantly working. It’s God-given talent, too.”
“I fight smart and I listen to the people in my corner,” Damon Flores stated. “Sparring against older people helps me.”
Flores has excelled in multiple sports since his childhood, including basketball, football and baseball.
“He’s a well-rounded athlete,” commented Damian Flores. “All of the other sports he’s played translate to boxing.”
When asked why he continues to experience success on the national stage, Damon Flores said: “I’ve already been in that situation before.”
“He’s comfortable in there because of his experience,” Damian Flores said. “He’s been doing this his whole life.”
When Flores is not training at home, he travels to Turlock, Modesto and Bay Area to work on his craft.
“We deal with gyms focused on positivity,” Damian Flores said. “We also have everything at our house.”
Flores graduated with honors from Cesar Chavez Jr. High in June.
He will be home-schooled the first half of the 2025-26 semester due to his busy schedule.
“Each tournament requires a week at a time,” Damian Flores said. “It’s a big sacrifice. He’s committed to it. He’s grown a lot. The childish behavior is gone. He’s becoming a young man.”
