The Keyes woman accused of stealing money from the Turlock Youth Soccer Association has a prior conviction for embezzlement, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office.

Assistant District Attorney Carol Shipley confirmed that Anita Anna Ybarra has a prior conviction for embezzlement in Merced County.

Ybarra, 42, was arrested Aug. 25 by the Turlock Police department and charged with embezzlement. The affidavit for an arrest warrant for Ybarra alleges that she wrote numerous checks to herself on Turlock Youth Soccer Association accounts that totaled up into the thousands of dollars.

According to a confidential source familiar with the Merced County case, Ybarra was convicted of embezzling more than $50,000 from the Merced County Tax Collector's Office between 1991 to 1995. The source said Ybarra was sentenced to two years in prison.

Ybarra is a former board member of the soccer association and handled some of the accounts for the competitive league.

A possible misappropriation of funds from the Turlock Youth Soccer Association's accounts was first brought to the association's attention in late 2007, and Ybarra was asked to step down in 2008. It was also around that time that the association contacted the Turlock Police Department with their suspicions, said Shelly Fernandes, the former commissioner of the Turlock Youth Soccer Association.
