A report of a vehicle fire in a rural area south of Keyes led to the discovery of badly burned human remains Sunday night.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case and has yet to identify the deceased.

The vehicle fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 5300 block of Griffin Road north of Turlock. The area is located between Taylor and Keyes roads.

After extinguishing the fire firefighters discovered a body inside the vehicle and requested the Sheriff's Department to respond.

"Detectives have not been able to identify the victim due to how badly burned the body was," the Sheriff's Department stated in a news release. "The Coroner's Office will need to use different methods to make identification and determine the cause of death."

There is no suspect information at this time.
