Sandeep Singh, 41, of Ceres, was arrested in Modesto Tuesday after he allegedly grabbed a teenage girl as she walked on the sidewalk in the 600 block of Tokay Avenue.

He faces kidnapping charges during a scheduled July 27 court appearance.

The victim said an Indian man approached her in a vehicle which she described in detail. He grabbed her but she broke free and ran, she told police. After her call to 9-1-1 at approximately 4 p.m., Modesto police quickly arrived on scene and found Singh and his vehicle in a nearby shopping center parking lot. He was booked into the Public Safety Center and out on $200,000 bail Wednesday afternoon.

The crime was reported to have occurred near Standiford Elementary School and homes.

Singh made the news in January 2016 when he was arrested by Turlock police on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon because he swung a ceremonial sword at a group of people during a fight at the Sikh Temple in Turlock. The charge was later dropped. The fight was the result of increased tension following a Stanislaus Superior Court ruling that found a group of Turlock Sikh Temple members acted illegally in taking control of the temple in 2013.

Anyone who saw the incident or has information on the case or Singh is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 521-4636. Callers may remain anonymous and eligible for a cash reward.
