Driver arrested in deadly hit-and-run crash

A 73-year-old Ceres man faces charges of felony hit-and-run after allegedly running his car into an elderly man riding a bicycle and inflicting fatal injuries.

The crash took place on the Pine Street overpass after 11 a.m. on Friday. The crash resulted in the death of the 74-year-old bicyclist Alfredo Vega Garcia of Modesto.

The police investigation determined that Gilbert Tavares, 73, of Ceres was responsible for the crash and arrested him during a 7:30 p.m. Friday traffic stop.

Investigators are seeking anyone who might have witnessed the collision and ask residents or business owners in the area to review security camera footage for any images that might be of assistance.
