Driver faces DUI charge following crash
Ceres Cop Car

Police arrested a 59-year-old Modesto man Saturday evening after he rear-ended another motorist allegedly while driving intoxicated.

The minor traffic crash occurred at 10:33 p.m., at Hatch and Mitchell roads. Maria Perez-Berber, 19, of Modesto, was on eastbound Hatch Road stopped for the red light at Mitchell Road when her 1997 Chevy Astro Van was struck from behind by a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Pedro Ramirez. Neither driver was hurt and both moved their vehicles to the parking lot and waited for the police.

While speaking to Ramirez an officer detected a strong odor of alcoholic on his breath and noticed his slurred speech. He had blood shot, watery eyes and was unsteady on his feet. Pedro was detained for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Ramirez was uncooperative during a field sobriety and breath test so a judge signed a warrant for a blood sample to be taken at Doctors Medical Center. Initial results revealed his blood alcohol content was 0.18 percent over double the legal limit.
He was transported and booked into the County Jail for DUI.
