A DUI suspect tried to run away from a Ceres police officer south of Oakdale but was later apprehended after a four-mile pursuit.

The incident unfolded at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21 as Officer Kiashira Ruiz, was driving back from Oakdale on southbound Albers Road after a multi-agency DUI checkpoint. Officer Ruiz was behind a silver Toyota Tundra that appeared to be drifting from side to side. She stopped the car at Albers and Claribel road and spoke to driver Pedro Castro, 39, of Modesto. Castro's truck smelled of alcohol. When Ruiz went back to her patrol car to run a warrants check, Pedro started up the truck and sped off.

Ruiz gave chase, reaching speeds of up to 90 mph. Approximately four miles later Castro pulled over when he reached Yosemite Boulevard.

He was arrested during a high-risk traffic stop. Castro was arrested and charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license, and leading an officer on a pursuit.
