The sounds of three gunshots in the 1100 block of Herndon Avenue on Friday evening, Jan. 22 drew the attention of a police officer who ended up arresting two men.
At 9:33 p.m. Officer Jesus Salinas was on patrol in 1000 block of Herndon Avenue when he heard three gunshots close by. He saw several occupants standing in the front yard of a residence and when he placed his spotlight on them, saw four men run into the house. Salinas called for backup and set up a perimeter around the house.
Police made announcements over the PA system for the men to come out. After a short time several men came out and were detained. Several of them were on searchable probation. A search of the house turned up a loaded Remington 700 rifle, numerous .38 caliber rounds, 7mm rounds and 30-30 rounds.
The weapon used to fire the rounds heard by the officer was not located however a 9 mm shell casing was found outside the house.
Two were detainees. Branden Gress, 27, of Modesto, was wanted for a parole violation. Carlos Villegas, 25, of Modesto, was booked on a $25,000 domestic violence warrant issued by Modesto Police Department.
The weapon and ammunition was confiscated and booked.
