The owner of a car which was hit by an alleged drunken driver Saturday morning began to chase the suspect and helped police make an arrest.
At 11:56 a.m. Officer Eric Gallegos was dispatched to a hit-and-run crash at the El Rematito Flea Market. The victim was following the suspect and gave directions on where the officer could find them. Gallegos caught up as the suspect, Alejandro Gomez, 20, of Ceres, was driving eastbound on Whitmore Avenue. Gallegos activated his lights in attempt to stop the vehicle atop the Whitmore overpass but Gomez ran through the red light at Whitmore and Central avenues. Other Ceres officers joined in the chase and Gomez finally pulled over at Whitmore Avenue and Seventh Street.
Gomez appeared to intoxicated and an open alcoholic beverage container was located inside the vehicle. He was arrested for DUI, hit-and-run, open container, and evading police.
