A transient man was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 28 after he was caught trying to break into an occupied home in the 2600 block of Coty Court.

Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Pat Crane said the suspect, John Chavez, 33, had attempted to enter through a back door while residents were inside at 3:49 p.m. The residents scared off the suspect who then fled.

Officers arrived and set up a perimeter, searching for the suspect based on a clothing description. Chavez tried walking out of the perimeter and was arrested without incident. The homeowner positively identified Chavez was the man who was on the property.

He was charged with attempted residential burglary and probation violation.
