Officers challenged by angry man

A 56-year-old Ceres man was arrested early Friday morning after he challenged officers who wanted to talk to him after he allegedly egged his wife's car at the Modesto Bee distribution center in the 1900 block of Rockefeller Drive.

Two officers arrived at the commercial building after a 1:59 a.m. call was placed by a female employee who said her husband threw eggs at her parked car. When the officers tried to talk to him, he got out of his car and took a fighting stance with fists and said "What the f--- are you going to do?" The officers grabbed Mark Schwitters, 56, by the arms and the fight was on. Schwitters was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

"Apparently he is going through a difficult time in his life," said Police Chief Brent Smith. "They just wanted to talk to him. It was kind of strange to the officers as well. It usually doesn't usually happen that way."

Schwitters was charged with battery on a police officer and vandalism to vehicle.
