Officers interrupt theft

Two officers on their way to another call interrupted an attempted commercial burglary inside the Punjab Plaza Shopping Center early on the morning of Wednesday, March 26.

Officers Carlos Quiroz and Josh Klinge were en route to a call at 4:42 a.m. when they passed by the shopping center at Pine Street and S. Central Avenue and saw a suspicious looking van backed up to the front door of APS Market. A man drove off but was stopped. A cable was hanging out of the back doors and the front doors had been pried. Officers believe that Carlos Zarate, 28, of Modesto, had attempted to tie the cable around a small cash-dispensing machine and pull it loose.

Inside the van police found crow bars and a police scanner.

Zarate was arrested for attempted commercial burglary.
