copteaserbox .tif

The driver of a car that sheared off a fire hydrant early Monday morning, sending a geyser of water spewing into the air, is being sought by Ceres Police.

If identified, the driver may face hit and run charges.

Police dispatchers were called at 2:57 a.m. about a solo crash at Herndon Road and Grandview Avenue. A witness told police that a car hit the hydrant and sped off. The car was described as a grey compact hatchback with a black passenger door. Police were unable to find the car and driver as the city street crews turned off water to the hydrant.

Anyone who suspects they know the location of the car or driver is urged to phone the information into Ceres Police dispatch at 538-5712.
