Suspect sought in May 1 Whitmore Avenue homicide

Sheriff's detectives are seeking to arrest Christopher Jose Schopp in the May 1 homicide investigation into the death of Vang Xiong.

Detectives believe Schopp lured Xiong and his brother to an orchard in the 2600 block of W. Whitmore Avenue in south Modesto at approximately 7:15 p.m. for a drug deal. Two other men were with Schopp. They were all armed during the drug deal and one of the men shot Xiong.

Xiong's brother loaded up his mortally wounded brother and began driving him to the hospital before he called 911 and stopped in the area of Kansas Avenue and Franklin Street in Modesto for help. An ambulance met the brother and took Xiong to the hospital, but he later died from his wounds.

Schopp and the two men fled in an unknown type car and were last seen driving east on West Whitmore Avenue.

Schopp is wanted for murder and criminal conspiracy. He is described as a Hispanic male, with brown eyes, standing 5-foot-6 and weighing 145 pounds. He is known to wear his long brown hair in a ponytail.
