Teen jailed after being stopped in car with drugs

A 19-year-old Modesto teen was arrested Wednesday evening after he was spotted driving a car bearing stolen license plates and found with drugs.

At 9:20 p.m., Officer Matt Berlier stopped a vehicle with stolen license plates at 2513 Don Pedro Road. Riley Utley, 19, of Modesto, said the car was his but police believe he stole plates to cover the fact that he had long-overdue license tags.

Berlier searched Utley and found a small plastic bindle containing 1.2 grams of cocaine in his right pocket. Utley claimed he was holding it for a friend.

While Utley was being booked, a deputy found 0.7 grams of methamphetamine, earning him an extra charge of smuggling drugs into a jail facility. He was also booked for felony possession of stolen property, misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, and possession of a controlled substance.
