The vacancy is not for long. Dollar General, which is expanding into the Central Valley market, is remodeling the space to open a Ceres store. A banner in front of the store was the first official public announcement of the move.
Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General Corporation is the nation's largest small-box discount retailer. In 2012, Dollar General opened its 10,000th store in Merced. Last year the chain opened a new store in Waterford. It has stores in 40 states, with Texas having the greatest number at 1,142. California has only 29.
