Ceres police have released the name of the man killed last month at the Howard Johnson Inn in Ceres but have no leads for a motive or who fatally shot him.

The victim was Jesus Maya, 26, of Modesto.

Lt. Mike Borges issued a statement saying investigators are "puzzled on the motive or what led to the shooting." Police have no descriptions of persons or vehicles of interest.

"To maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation, Ceres detectives are not releasing any further information at this time," the statement read.

Maya died from a single shot to the back prior to 7:13 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29. A guest in Room 132 in the courtyard building walked out of her room and saw Maya's body, clad only in boxer shorts, lying in front of Room 133.

Police have not determined the caliber or type of firearm used. The bullet passed through the victim.

Detective Derek Perry is asking anyone with information to call the Ceres Police Detectives Bureau at 538-5730.
