City considering adding stop signs at two intersections
Intersection of Third and North
At the request of Councilman Daniel Martinez, the city of Ceres is looking into adding stop signs on North Street at Third Street for safety reasons. But the action won't take place unless the traffic warrants are found.

At a cost of $8,800, AMG Engineering will be studying two intersections which the council feels could be time for a four-way stop.

Councilman Daniel Martinez asked the city to look into adding stop signs on North Street at Third Street because of all the traffic that takes place at community functions at Whitmore Park, including summer Concerts in the Park.

In another location, Vice Mayor Bret Silveira suggests that a four-way stop is needed at Roeding Road and Ninth Street.

Adding traffic controls requires traffic studies and to see if they are warranted based on the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Further, sight distance analysis will be conducted using aerial images and field review, if needed.

An assessment of vehicular delay to minor streets during traffic during peak hours is also required to evaluate collateral impact. The results will be analyzed for possible installation of the stop signs.

Studies for stop signs is costly and can take time, said City Engineer Kevin Waugh. He noted that the city has spent $10,000 to evaluate for traffic controls at Moore and Service roads “and we’re still waiting for the county to put their review comments together.”

“There’s quite a lot of activity that they have to do to justify a stop sign warrant and so they go through the full analysis,” said Waugh.

Doing studies for two intersections for $8,800 is a bargain.
