California’s judicial system is taking a significant step toward enhancing language access in its courts with the launch of the California Court Interpreter Workforce Pilot Program.
Approved by the Judicial Council on May 17, 2024, the program aims to expand the number of certified court interpreter employees by reimbursing training costs and examination fees for aspiring interpreters.
This initiative marks a progressive effort to bridge language barriers in the courtroom and strengthen California’s diverse judicial system.
Court interpreters play a crucial role in ensuring equal access to justice for individuals with limited English proficiency. Recognizing the growing demand for qualified interpreters, the program provides financial support, flexible participation, and guaranteed employment opportunities for successful candidates.
Currently, Stanislaus County Superior Court is actively recruiting interpreters for Spanish and Punjabi languages. Applicants selected for the pilot program will receive reimbursement for up to three exam attempts and must commit to working in the courts for at least three years after certification.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to make a significant impact in our judicial system while receiving support to cover necessary expenses,” said Stanislaus County Superior Court Courtroom Services Manager Ana Valencia. “If you or someone you know is interested, please encourage them to apply.”
Applications for Cohort 2 are open until 5 p.m. on April 21. Interested candidates must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check, and review the list of participating courts before applying.
