Ice cream, Harry Potter highlight July library events

Local branches of the Stanislaus County Library offer a host of activities in July, both literary and creative, for all ages.

Community members may take part in a variety of free programs at the Ceres Library this month, beginning with puzzle nights on Mondays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome to test their skill level with a variety of puzzles ranging in difficulty levels.

Preschool Story Time will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Story Times feature new and classic picture books, flannel board and puppet stories, finger plays, music and dancing, for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers, however all ages are welcome.

“Wiggle Worms” will be offered on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Wiggle Worms is a special Story Time program designed for babies, active toddlers, and adult caregivers, however all ages are welcome to attend. Wiggle Worms features stories, lap bounces, music, dancing, rhythm activities, finger plays and more.

Children may make their own pet rocks on Thursday, July 12 at 3:30 p.m. Crafters will also have an opportunity to decorate a home for their pet rock buddies. Children ages 4 and under are welcome to participate, however they must have direct parental supervision. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ceres Library.

Wee Move and Play will be held on Wednesday, July 18 at 11 a.m. Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to enjoy music, movement, and sensory play.

The library will host a paper airplane activity on Thursday, July 19 at 3:30 p.m. Children will learn how to make paper airplanes that really fly. Children 5 and under are welcome to participate, however they must have parental supervision.

The Ceres Library Book Club will meet on Wednesday, July 25 at 11:30 a.m. Participants will discuss Mudbound by Hillary Jordan.

Children may make a bug-themed craft on Thursday, July 26 at 3:30 p.m. Participants will use provided craft materials to make a magnetic bug creature that can be used to decorate their refrigerators. Children ages 4 and under are welcome to participate, however they must have direct parental supervision.

Keyes Library

July events at the Keyes Library will include craft events, LEGO days and a Harry Potter party.

The library will hold a Day of Coloring from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday July 5. Coloring sheets, colored pencils and crayons will be provided for everyone.

Children will have the opportunity to build LEGO displays for the library using the library’s LEGO and LEGO DUPLO blocks from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 10 and July 24. LEGO play helps children develop fine motor skills. Children under 4 are welcome but must have direct parental supervision. 

Set sail with ventriloquist Tony Borders and his crew of puppets at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 10. Help find the treasure in the library through a fun, imaginative show featuring a talkative drawing, magic with music and cool critters from around the world. 

Children may create a custom aquarium out of a jar using blue water, glitter, colorful rocks, and a tiny toy goldfish from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 12. 

Adults and teens can create custom scented candles using essential oils and candle wax. The library will provide a variety of food coloring and decorative ribbon to make candles look as good as it will smell.

Children can combine science and their sweet tooth to make homemade ice-cream from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25 during this STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) Works session. 

The library will host a Harry Potter Day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 26. Children may get sorted into their Hogwarts house, then design and color their own personalized crest. If you receive a special delivery from Hedwig during your sorting, you will win a prize.
