Arrrrr. Children in Keyes were treated to a number of pirate related events at the Keyes Library on Thursday afternoon in celebration of the International "Talk like a Pirate Day" on Friday.

There was no walking of the plank but the library hosted a pirate hate making craft out of construction paper, a pin-the eyepatch on the pirate game with prizes, a pirate trivia contest and the loaning of books on pirates. Those who took the trivia quiz learned that not all pirate flags are black, that Blackbeard's name was actually Edward Teach, that Anne Bonney was a famous female pirate, and that the Jolly Roger is the name for any flag flown to identify a ship's crew as pirates who were about to attack.

During October the Keyes Library will be offering several fun, festive, and seasonal events.

Persons of any age are welcome to participate in the "Creepy Candy Count" from Oct. 1 to Oct. 29. During this time, participants may guess the number of candies in the jar. The closest guess will win the entire jar of candy.

Children may visit the library on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. to participate in the Monster Mania Craft and make cute monsters out of yarn.

Another activity for children is the Lollipop Ghost and Vampire Craft on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. During this craft, participants can make vampires and ghosts using lollipops.

Teens ages 13 through 18 are invited to participate in Teen Read Week celebrations Oct. 13-16. Throughout the week, teens may stop by the Keyes Library and complete a crossword puzzle to win a prize. Teens are also invited to participate in the Teen Read Week party at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 and enjoy food, refreshments, and make paracord bracelets.

All patrons may also participate in the Crazy Crayons Pumpkin Craft on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m., making unique pumpkins using crayons and a heat applicator.

The Keyes Library will end the month with a unique Harry Potter-themed Halloween celebration. Children, teens, and families can visit the library at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 to participate in Halloween at Hogwarts where participants can make Harry Potter crafts, pose for a picture, participate in potion making classes, and sample sweet treats from Honeydukes.
