California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil and Stanislaus County District 5 Supervisor Channce Condit toured an area of south Modesto which will benefit from the snagging of a $5 million in state funding for infrastructure improvements. The funding allocation, supported by local leaders and backed by over a thousand signatures from concerned residents, will address the decades-long needs of the impoverished area.
The funds will be used to install curbs, gutters and sidewalks as well as sewers and lighting.
The two elected officials began their tour on Friday afternoon in the 1500 block of Eureka Street.
The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors has committed $16 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for neglected areas in South Modesto, recognizing the need for revitalization.
Alvardo-Gil said the one-time state funding will “play a crucial role in improving the health, safety, and accessibility of services for one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the county.”
The funding request, spearheaded by Supervisor Condit, received overwhelming support from local leaders and garnered over a thousand signatures from residents across Modesto who recognized the urgent need for these funds.
“It cannot be emphasized enough how dire the situation is for the residents of South Modesto,” said the senator. “Over 85% of the residents in the targeted neighborhoods are Latino and low-income families who have long endured generational disinvestment and have seen little return on their contributions. This funding will be allocated to address critical infrastructure needs, including sidewalks, sewers, curbing and lighting, in a coordinated effort.”
