Channce Condit bucked the majority on the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors by casting the lone no vote against a proposal to increase the base salaries of unrepresented confidential assistants, management employees, department heads, and supervisors over the next three years.
The vote came during the August 5 meeting.
The 11 percent salary increase for managers, department heads and elected officials was supported by Supervisors Terry Withrow, Mani Grewal, Vito Chiesa and Buck Condit.
Authorized were a 4 percent salary increase effective immediately, followed by an additional 4 percent in July 2026 and 3 percent in July 2027. The increases are intended to keep up with the cost of living.
Supervisor Condit expressed strong opposition to the measure, citing concerns about fairness, fiscal responsibility, and the growing disparity in pay between frontline employees and executive management.
“I cannot support increasing salaries for department heads and elected officials while the wage gap between top management and our frontline workers continues to grow significantly,” said Condit. “County government has become too top-heavy. We need to reinvest in the foundation, which is the staff on the ground who interact with the public day in and day out, and deliver the essential services our communities rely on. A strong, well-supported frontline workforce is what keeps the County running — and that’s where our priorities should be.”
“At a time when our residents are being asked to do more with less, government leadership must lead by example,” Condit added. “This vote reflects my commitment to standing with working families and protecting taxpayer dollars.”
