8.5 percent jobless rate in Ceres during November

Stanislaus County's unemployment rate in November saw a slight bump, but continues to stay in the single digits and below the year-ago estimate, according to the latest numbers released from the Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate for November was at 7.9 percent, up from the revised rate of 7.8 percent in October and below the year-ago estimate of 9 percent, according to the EDD.

Stanislaus County had an estimated labor force of 246,300 people in November, with approximately 19,400 reporting they were unemployed.

For the month, the farming sector recorded the largest decline in jobs, going from 15,300 positions to 13,400, for a decline of 1,900 jobs, the EDD reported. Historically, the sector sees a decline in positions in November because the majority of the crops grown in the region have had their harvest.

Other sectors reporting a job decline in Stanislaus County in November were: Mining, Logging, and Construction, which lost an estimated 200 positions; Manufacturing, which posted about 100 fewer jobs; and Educational and Health Services, which also declined by approximately 100 positions. Even though those three sectors were down for the month, their numbers are higher than the same time last year.

The sector with the largest job growth in November in Stanislaus County was Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, which added an estimated 900 positions for the month. This sector includes retail, which between general merchandise stores and clothing and accessory stores, accounted for 25.8 percent of the added jobs, according to the EDD.
The only other sector that added jobs for the month, was the Government sector, which added approximately 100 new positions.

Merced County had an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent, up from a rate of 8.6 percent in October. San Joaquin County had an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent in November, up slightly from 7.6 percent the month prior.

California had an unemployment rate of 5 percent for the month and the nation's was at 4.4 percent for the same time period.

Ceres had an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent in November, up from the 8.4 percent in October.

Hughson had a November rate of 11.4 percent, up from the 11.3 percent posted in October.

Keyes had an unchanged rate of 12.9 percent in November.

Turlock had an unemployment rate of 7 percent in November, the same rate as posted in October.

Denair had a rate of 4.5 percent in November, up slightly from the 4.4 percent posted in October.

The occupations with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for November were: Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers - 537; Registered Nurses - 520; Retail Salespersons - 174; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers - 155; Maintenance and Repair Workers - 108; Janitors and Cleaners, Except Maids and Housekeeping - 105; Customer Service Representatives - 104; Light Truck and Delivery Service Drivers - 98; Laborers and Freight, Stock, and Material Movers, Hand - 89; and Teacher Assistants - 88.

The 10 companies that posted the most help wanted ads for November in Stanislaus County were: West Suburban Medical Center - 210; The Hospitals of Providence - 144; Tenet Healthcare Corporation - 130; Sutter Health - 119; TruStaff - 72; Ceres Unified School District - 59; Supplemental Health Care - 52; Robert Half International - 51; Target Corporation - 50; and California State University System - 48.
