Police seek girl's bedroom intruder

A 10-year-old girl underwent a harrowing experience early Sunday morning when a stranger broke into her bedroom and threatened to cut her throat with a knife if she yelled for help, said Deputy Police Chief Mike Borges.

The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Lake Tahoe Court. The girl's mother did not know about the incident until she woke up at 8 a.m. and noticed that the home's front door was ajar. When she asked family members if they knew anything about the door, her daughter reported that at approximately 4:10 a.m. she was awakened by a dark-skinned Latino or black man with a mustache who was sitting next to her. At first the girl pretended to be asleep, said police, but the intruder began speaking to her. The girl told police that the intruder held a knife and threatened to cut her throat if she yelled for help. The man also said that he knew the girl's father.

The girl estimated that the man was sitting in her bedroom for about an hour. Borges said the girl didn't report the crime right away because she was frightened.

"There's too many things that were discovered - and some that I'm not going to discuss at this point - that lead us to believe that this incident took place," said Borges.

Officers who investigated the scene believe that the man entered the house by crawling through a kitchen window. Police found the window blinds moved and items knocked over in the area to indicate entry through the window.

Apparently the girl was not physically harmed.

The suspect was described as having short brown spiky hair, and wearing a white T shirt and dark blue jeans. Anyone in the area of Morgan and Whitmore or Blaker and Kinser on Sunday who may have clues about the suspect are urged to call detective Randy Moore at 538-5728.
