A memorial service was held Monday at Centenary Methodist Church in Modesto for Calvin S. Grover, 82, of Modesto. He died Jan. 24, 2010.

Born April 20, 1927 in Los Angeles, Cal graduated from Cathedral High School. He served in the Navy from May 24, 1945 to July 18, 1946. He was a corpsman aboard the USS Maddox, a destroyer, which sailed the Asian Pacific waters. He moved to Modesto to attend Modesto Junior College where he met and married Audrey Johnson in 1950. He received his teaching credential and master's degree from the University of the Pacific. Mr. Grover taught at Shackleford Elementary School in South Modesto, Fremont, Roosevelt and La Loma elementary schools in Modesto, before moving to Downey High School, where be taught math. He then became a counselor at Downey where he ended his career after 38 years.

He enjoyed working with Downey FFA, being outdoors working in a garden and yard and working with wood. Mr. Grover was a member of the Sylvan Club, Phi Delta Kappa, and Centenary United Methodist Church.

He leaves behind his wife, Audrey Grover; two children, Janet Skooglund and Steven Grover; and one grandson, Tyler Grover.

Remembrances may be sent to Centenary United Methodist Church of Modesto or Friends of Hospice.
