Gewargis Soro

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 3005 Sixth Street, Ceres, for Gewargis Homiz Soro, 55, of Modesto. He died recently at home after a long struggle with cancer.

Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park under the direction of Allen Mortuary.

Born July 1953, Mr. Soro was a native of Iraq, and established a life working in law as an attorney. He moved to the United States in the late 1970s, and settled in Detroit, Mich., to be near his parents. He began taking miscellaneous jobs to help support his family. While visiting California in 1999 he met Najiba Nina Paulis, not long after that in 2001 he moved to California. In 2002, he and Najiba were married and began their life together, settling in Modesto. Gewargis was a union member and worked as a butcher for large supermarkets. Gewargis was a religious, God-fearing man, and lived by his faith.

He leaves behind his wife, Najiba Nina Paulus of Modesto; his father, Hormiz Soro of Modesto; his brothers Jindu Dansa and John Soro, both of Modesto, and Dansa Soro of Detroit, Mich.; and his sister, Julie Soro of Melbourne, Australia.
