A Mass was held Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Livermore for Helen Dorothy Costa George-Wedel, 92, of Livermore. The former Ceres resident died Feb. 20, 2009

Burial was at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Livermore under the direction of Callaghan Mortuary.

Born Sept. 7, 1916 in Modesto to Anthoney and Mary Costa, Helen lived in Ceres and graduated from Ceres High School in 1933. Mrs. George-Wedel worked until she was 75 years old, 26 years for Cresta Blanca Winery and nearly six years at Weibal Winery. She was also a longtime member of I.D.E.S., a Portuguese Lodge. She was an avid bowler and bowled in many state and national tournaments. Helen also loved to crochet and making dresses and blankets for her grandchildren. She worked and volunteered at the Livermore Senior Center where she organized many senior overnight bus trips to Reno.

She leaves behind her children, Gloria George and Henry George, both of Livermore and Mary Ann Yurich of Murphys; her brothers, Don Costa of Turlock, Buddy Costa of Tuolumne, Freddie Costa of Modesto and Francis Costa of Iowa; her sister, Dolores Coelho of Turlock; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 1964 by daughter Lillian Scribner, first husband Henry George in 1980, second Husband Raymond Wedel in 1996, and her siblings, Larry Costa, Tony Costa, Luis Costa, Evelyn Borges.
