A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Lakewood Funeral Home's Heritage Chapel for Imogene Frances Martinez, 82, of Ceres. She died peacefully May 26, 2010 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

Born July 29, 1927 in Los Angeles to Elsie Belle Mallory, Imogene lived her childhood in the Imperial Valley. In 1951 she went to work for Pacific Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She educated herself to later become one of their first female engineers. Mrs. Martinez helped to design what is now the AT&T Universal Plan over 30 years ago.

In 1958 she married Roy Vincent Martinez, a career sailor with the Navy. They lived in San Francisco, Yuma, Nev., Norfolk, Va., and Fallen, Nev. After Marty's retirement in 1968 they settled in Ceres and built their home which Genie continued to live in for another 27 years after Marty's passing in 1982. Imogene enjoyed gardening and being involved in the Telephone Pioneers Club.

Remembrances may be sent to the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.
