A graveside service was held Monday at Lakewood Memorial Park for James Robert "J.R." Parker, 85, of Ceres. He died Oct. 7, 2009.

A memorial service and reception was held at Hickman Community Church.

Salas Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Born Oct. 12, 1923 in St. Louis, Mo. J.R. was a longtime roofing contractor in the Modesto area for over 50 years. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having received two Purple Heart medals for injuries during the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He faithfully served his country in Europe until the conclusion of the war. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and many friends. As a believer in Christ, he was looking forward to his eternal security in heaven.

He leaves behind his sister, Joyce Hogan; four sons, Michael Parker, Eldon Parker, Daniel Parker and David Parker; a granddaughter raised as his child, Beverly Morrow; nine other grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Parker, and six siblings.
