A Celebration of Life was held at Allen Mortuary on Saturday for Jesse Harold Martin, 85, of Hughson. He died Jan. 27, 2010 in Turlock surrounded by his family.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born in August 1924, Mr. Martin was born in Broken Arrow, Okla., to Homer and Gracie Martin. He was raised in Anderson, Mo., and at the age of 15 moved to Hughson with his family. Jesse served in the Army during World War II and received many medals and citations during his tour in the Pacific, including a Silver Star and Purple Heart. In 1947, he married his wife of 63 years, Lula Thompson. For over 50 years, Jesse owned and operated a peach ranch in Hughson. For 25 years, he worked as a Millwright for Hansen's, later known as Champion, installing industrial equipment. Mr. Martin also was a residential contractor for 20 years. Jesse loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending his time at the lake. Jesse owned one of the first houseboats on Lake Don Pedro. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, reliving hunting stories, and playing with his grandchildren.

He leaves behind his wife, Lula Martin of Hughson; his sons, Wayne Martin and Allen Martin, both of Hughson; his sisters, Gladys Middleton of Ceres and Dortha Adams of Modesto; his brother, Homer Lee Martin, Jr. of Ceres; his grandchildren, Kevin Martin, Travis Martin, Ryan Martin, Rachelle Madsen and Nichole Dowdy; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sister Verna Drake.
