J.W. Nolan Smith

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 6 at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella for J.W. Nolan Smith, 82, of Ceres. He died recently.

Allen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Born December 1924, Mr. Smith was born and raised in ElDorado, Ark. After his military service in the Army he lived in Riverbank for 21 years. He has been living in Ceres since 1984. J.W. worked as a custodian for 32 years, many of those at the Ceres Drive-In Theater. He enjoyed his work and working in his yard. Mr. Smith loved reading the Bible and looking after his dog, Shep.

He leaves behind his children, Emily Johnson of Modesto, Gloria Smith of Ceres, and Jim Smith of Turlock; his sisters, Betty Ozmondson, Mickie McDaniels, and Myrn Lee, all of Modesto, and Velma Williams of Lodi; and 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Smith, and children Sandra Sauls, Joyce Wageman, Margie Smith, Gary Smith, and two brothers, Winfred Smith and Doyle Smith.
