A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9 at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel for Martha Ann Linton, 90, of Ceres. She died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Lakewood Funeral Home.
Born July 27, 1914 in Jonesboro, Ark., Mrs. Linton attended Arkansas State College where she majored in dramatic art and directed plays. She was noted throughout northeastern Arkansas for her voice talents and dramatic reading. Mrs. Linton went on to teach at her local elementary school.
In 1937 Mrs. Linton moved to Amarillo, Texas, where she worked for the Santa Fe Railroad offices as a private secretary. She was also a Civil Service secretary for the local draft board during World War II. In 1943 she moved to California where she met and married real estate broker and rancher Frank W. Linton Sr. She and her husband farmed cling and freestone peaches and raised Poll-Hereford cattle in west Modesto. Mrs. Linton moved to Ceres in 1985 after his death.
Mrs. Linton was a member of the First Christian Church, Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority, Poll-Hereford Association, Cling Peach Canners & Growers, California Farm Bureau and California Women in Agriculture.
She leaves behind two daughters, Rebecca Ann Mendes of Ceres and Martha Jo Green of Utah; five grandsons, including Edward James Mendes Jr. and Thomas Linton Mendes, both of Ceres; and nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Frank W. Linton Jr.
