Nellie M. Graffis

A graveside service was held Jan. 17 at Stockton Cemetery for Nellie Mable Peckham Graffis, 101, of Stockton. The Ceres native died Jan. 14, 2008.

Born in Ceres on March 5, 1906, Mrs. Graffis was a graduate of Ceres High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Lowell Addison Barham, on graduation day in June 1924. They had two daughters, Dorothy and Margery. Mr. Barham died 31 years into the marriage with Nellie remarrying in 1957 to George Washington Graffis. They were married 35 years.

Mrs. Graffis enjoyed hiking and picnicking in the outdoors. An avid gardener, she loved growing her own vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, and watching sports. Mrs. Graffis attended Central Methodist Church. As a golf enthusiast, Mrs. Graffis was a member of the Stockton Golf & Country Club. She enjoyed traveling to golf courses around the state with her daughter and son-in-law in their RV.

She leaves behind her daughter, Dorothy Broin of Stockton; and six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by daughter Margery Schneider, granddaughter Karen Mistretta, a brother and two sisters.
