A funeral service was held Saturday at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Modesto for Nick Kounias, 45, of Hughson. He died July 25 at a residential shooting.

Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of burial at Acacia Memorial Park.

Born March 31, 1967 in Modesto, Nick lived in Hughson for the last 20 years. He attended Beyer High School, worked for Seneca Fruit Cannery for 24 years, and was a seamer mechanic that worked the graveyard shift. He attended Angelus University in Los Angeles and received a certificate of completion as a seamer mechanic. He was also a certified forklift operator. He planned to enroll at Modesto Junior College to become a certified welder at the time of his death. Mr. Kounias was known as a handyman who knew how to fix everything and enjoyed playing pool and riding motorcycles and dirt bikes, jet skis. Nick was a member of the "Beans and Rice Ministry" at Bethel Church in Modesto and were actively involved in feeding the homeless. They were also volunteers at the Modesto Gospel Mission.

He leaves behind his parents, George and Elizabeth Kounias; his fiancee, Judy Henderson; his brother, Stratos; and his sister, Helen.
