A memorial service was held Friday at the Empire Church of the Brethren, 5101 Yosemite Boulevard, Empire, for Olen E. Miller, 96, of Empire. He died Nov. 28, 2009 of complications as a result of a brief battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 4, 1912 Olen was the only son of Frank and Bessie Miller. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1930 and then purchased farm property and was a dairy farmer his entire life. Mr. Miller also owned a truck route for the Milk Producers Association. At one time, he also was a partner in the Modesto Drilling Company. Olen was a square dancer for about 20 years with the Ceres Twisters Square Dancers and served as the president and was later awarded a life membership. Mr. Miller spent at least 10 years as a volunteer at Scenic General Hospital. He also served several years with the Central California Square Dancers Association, eventually as president. He raced boats for 30 years, was a league bowler for 50 years and was an avid Giants, 49ers and Kings fan.

He leaves behind his daughter, Kathleen Hall; his grandchildren, Patrick McGhee of Oakdale, Molly McGhee and Sean McGhee both of Modesto, Joann Riley of Round Rock, Texas, and Julie Pena of Waco, Texas; and 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Evelyn Meachem and Vivian Harvey, wife Edna Miller and son Allan Miller.
