A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, June 15 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 27004 Patwin Road, Davis, for Reverend Nancy Brooks Shaffer, 61, of Davis. She died June 5, 2012 at her home from an aggressive brain tumor which was diagnosed last June.

Born Aug. 11, 1950 to Lee and Marjorie Brooks of Modesto, Nancy was a 1968 Hughson High School and 1972 University of California, Davis graduate, Phi Beta Kappa. After earning a master's degree from California State University, Sacramento, she served as a psychologist in public schools in Vacaville and Chicago, Ill., specializing in work with children with learning problems. She also did case work for psychiatric hospitals.

She decided to earn a 2002 Master of Divinity degree at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley. Skinner House, the Unitarian Universalist church's publishing arm, published a book of her meditations while she was still a student. A second book, also from Skinner, is in process for publication which chronicles her year of living with a brain tumor.

Rev. Shaffer served Unitarian Universalist churches in Monterey and Chicago, Ill., as interim minister; as parish minister in Glen Allen, Va.,and, most recently, as associate minister for Religious Education in Ann Arbor, Mich. She returned home to Davis in the fall of 2011. She was a member of both the Unitarian Universalist Church and St. Martins Episcopal Church of Davis.

Beside her parents, she leaves behind a brother, Michael Brooks of Sonora; and a nephew, Robert Tallmon of Modesto.
