A celebration of life was held Saturday at Grace Community Christian Church in Ceres for Teresa "Terry" Carr, 85, of Ceres. She died Feb. 23, 2009 at her home following a brief illness.

Born June16, 1923 in Limerick, Ireland, the youngest daughter of nine children, Terry left Ireland in 1943 to support the war effort working in a munitions factory in London, England. It was here she met and married a young American soldier, Donald Gene Carr. She lived in Durham County, England, near an American airbase, until the end of the war when she returned to her native Ireland in preparation for coming to America. In 1947 Terry and Donald moved to Empire, where they built and operated Carr's Market, and two mobile home parks for 35 years. She lived in Empire until 1980 when she moved to Ceres. Mrs. Carr loved to tell stories of her native homeland, and welcomed friends and family with home cooked food and a cup of hot tea. She committed her life to Christ in the early 1970s and, with her husband, supported youth ministry, missionaries and the Gideon Bible Society. She enjoyed traveling and spoke often of her 1980 trip to the Holy Land. Mrs. Carr had been a member of Grace Community Christian Church in Ceres.

She leaves behind three children, Patricia Mason of Ceres, Donald Carr Jr. of Denair and Kenneth Carr of Modesto; three brothers, Chris Sheehan of Durham, England, and Tony Sheehan and Michael Sheehan, both of Limerick, Ireland; eight grandchildren, Kim Hamilton, Karen Lumpkin, Sara Johnansen, Desti Ellis, Tiffina Hammons, Chris Hammons, Dennis Herd, and Matt James; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Donald Carr in 1987.

Remembrances may be sent to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356; or to Grace Community Christian Church, 3754 E. Service Road, Ceres, CA 95307.
