Crosswalks would benefit students
a-letter-envelope-5

Editor, Ceres Courier,

I believe we need school signage and a crosswalk on Fifth street.

As a junior at Ceres High I am involved in extracurriculars like the cheer and track team. Therefore, I use the bus drop off on Fifth Street all year round.

I also was a Ceres Cowboys cheerleader and we would use the high school's field. So I constantly crossed Fifth to get to games.

Throughout my several years of crossing Ffth Street to get to and from Ceres High. I have seen countless cases of teenagers, adults, and children almost get hit trying to just cross safely. Studies show "crosswalks are missing in 3 out of 10 crossings and 4 out of 10 school zones do not have proper signage." Fifth Street is part of the three and four percent that don't have crosswalks and signage. In 2017 crosswalks and signage on Fifth are needed more than ever because "since 2013 there has been a 13 percent increase in death rates of 12- to 19-year-olds crossing to and from school in school zones without proper crosswalks or signage."

I understand that not everyone who crosses Fifth Street will follow the rules of the crosswalk but more than 80 percent of teenagers use crosswalks when they are provided. Why not give the 80 percent a chance to feel safe and be safe getting to and from school. To suggest students are safer without school signage and crosswalks on Fifth Street is to avoid the reality of what students experience everyday.
