Our democracy suffers with voters carrying more about luxury than knowledge
Letters

Editor, Ceres Courier,

Our 19th century Lady Liberty stands fully clothed from neck to ankle at the entrance to New York Harbor.

Our 21st century Lady Libertarian arrives at gala events with a shred of clothing glancing the side of each breast and naked from inner thigh to toe. This is a metaphor for how our democracy has gone.

The nation once focused on women’s suffrage and equal pay, but now we care more about freeing the nipple and tossing the undergarment than about freeing the underclass in America.

Whoopi Goldberg, moderator of the daytime TV talk show The View, has a substantial faith in the idea of getting out the vote. Polls don’t matter, media doesn’t matter, only the voter doing her patriotic duty matters. And, of course, having the right opinions.

On the other hand, Lady Liberty believed that voters must have knowledge of history and high character in order to vote with clarity. Lady Nipple and the luxury class do not care about knowledge and character. They care about money, fashion and privilege.

If only we knew where to go from here.
