Prop 50 disenfranchises 40% of state’s GOP voters
letter

Editor, Ceres Courier,

Two weekends ago hundreds of protests were staged across the country under the heading of No Kings Day. They were based on the premise that we need to protect our constitutional democracy from the excesses of President Trump acting like a king. I understand why some feel that way; they have been taught that the United States is a democracy.

I looked for what the Constitution says about our democracy and found this in Article IV, Section 4: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.”

“Democracy” is not anywhere in the Constitution. What “democracy” are politicians trying to protect? Why object when the executive, the president, takes steps to defend us from domestic violence? The democracy they describe is like a mob rule French revolutionary kind where opponents are rushed off to jail by frenzied crowds led by a mere accusation. That is not what an American Republic is. The Constitution gives the executive authority to act when Congress does not. The solution is for Congress to do its job.

The Republicans in Congress have already done their job. It is time to urge the Democrats in the Senate to do theirs. The solution is not disenfranchising 40 percent of California’s voters by giving even more power to Democrat one-party rule. Vote “No” on Proposition 50!
