For the first time in three years, Ceres High School's varsity boys golf team has qualified an individual for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Championships.

Two Bulldogs, senior Carter Silveira and freshman Ian Couture, will participate thanks to their consistent play throughout the Valley Oak League season.

Silveira fired a 12-over-par 84 en route to a ninth-place tie at the VOL tournament on Tuesday, May 4 at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camps. Carter earned second-team, all-conference honors. He racked up 56 points in league.

Silveira narrowly missed qualifying for divisionals in each of his first three seasons. Carter had perfect attendance this year.

"He grew up," Bulldogs head coach Scott Smith said. "His work ethic was different. If he didn't do something right during a match, he'd make corrections at the range. I'm very happy with how he performed this year. Carter set the tone for the team. He took Ian under his wing."

Couture was awarded a berth as an alternate on Wednesday in place of Weston Ranch's Joel Keough, who could not play due to another prior commitment.

Ian and Weston Ranch's James Aragon were both in the running for the final spot. Both players accumulated 30 points in conference play.

Couture outshot Aragon 94-99 at the VOL championships.

"That's a big accomplishment for a freshman," Smith said. "He earned a divisional-qualifier patch."

Ceres High placed fifth at the VOL tourney with a team score of 481.

The Bulldogs finished ahead of Manteca (500), Weston Ranch (509), Lathrop (656) and Central Valley (did not participate).

"That's exactly where I figured we would be," Smith said. "I'm very pleased. We'll contend for the title next year when we move to the WAC."

Ceres High's Vince Tomao, Tyler Story and Blake Hurst shot 89, 105 and 112, respectively.

Tomao totaled 29 points in the VOL's individual standings.

"He just missed out (on a divisional berth)," Smith said.
