Central Valley High School's varsity volleyball team doubled its Valley Oak League win total from last season with Wednesday's 28-30, 25-23, 25-19, 25-11 triumph over visiting Weston Ranch.

The Hawks ended a three-match losing streak that spanned two weeks en route to collecting their second win on the year.

"It's a relief, honestly," sophomore Alyssa Long said. "We now know we can beat people and compete at this level. We're psyched."

Central Valley (2-5 VOL) got contributions from all 12 of their players, including Long, Ruby Ramirez, Kiana Lallana, Kayla Lolkus, Valerie Uti, Victoria Romo, Alisha Segmiller, Tiffany Reeves, Amanda Lopez, Gigi Sahota, Angela Medina and Nicole Weese.

Long had 10 kills, five aces and two blocks.

Ramirez tallied 16 assists and three aces.

Lallana added five kills.

Airica Haynes led the Cougars (0-7 VOL) with 16 kills and eight blocks.

Mariann Aumentado dished out 10 assists.

Jerose Salamanca added 18 digs.

Long had eight service points, including seven in row, in leading Central Valley past Weston Ranch in Game 4 (25-11).

Central Valley led from start to finish in winning Game 3 (25-19). With Alyssa serving, the Hawks reeled off six straight points during a momentum-swaying run that turned a three-point lead into a 22-13 advantage.

Central Valley managed to take Game 2 (25-23) despite squandering a 22-14 lead.

Tied at 23-all, the Hawks scored the final two points to secure the victory.

Central Valley blew a 20-15 lead in losing Game 1 (30-28).

The two teams rallied multiple times as there were 14 ties.

The Hawks secured their first league win in 2008 against East Union on Sept. 24.

Prior to beating Weston Ranch, Central Valley lost to Manteca, Oakdale and Sierra.

"We looked good today," first-year head coach Tauheedah Gaines said.

Added Long: "We were focused and we definitely talked more. We worked as a team."
