Johansen edged the Ceres High boys golf team by nine strokes on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs rebounded with a 204-to-219 victory over the Atwater Falcons in swirling winds at Modesto Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.

"We bounced back from a tough loss yesterday," said Ceres coach Butch Mendonca.

Ceres improved to 7-5 in the Central California Conference standings.

Atwater fell to 3-9 in league.

Two of Ceres' players shot in the 30s.

Jeff Warn finished with a 1-over-par 36.

"That's his best score of the year and that was in 30-mph winds," Mendonca said.

The junior had two birdies, five pars, one bogey and one double bogey.

"He putted well," Mendonca said. "He only had 13 putts on nine holes."

Warn would have shot even-par if he didn't bogey the last hole. He missed a 3-foot putt.

Nick Wilcox shot a 2-over 37. The junior had two birdies and seven pars.

"Nick had 14 putts on nine holes," Mendonca said.

Adam Dusi shot a 43. The senior had three pars.

Ben Martinez shot a 44. The senior struggled after solid play on the first five holes.

Martinez had a double bogey on the sixth hole, lost his ball on the seventh hole and finished with a triple bogey and made bogey on the eighth and ninth holes.

"He was 2-over going into the sixth (hole)," Mendonca said. "He kind of lost it."

Chad Jantz also shot a 44. The junior had two pars, five bogeys and two double bogeys.

"Ben and Chad are too good of golfers to be shooting 44," Mendonca said.

Alex Khan led the Falcons with a 3-over 38. Ryan Lancaster and Myles Anderson had identical scores of 44. Kyle Frank and Adam Forte followed at 47 and 50, respectively.

Vikings edge Dawgs

The Vikings defeated the Bulldogs in a tiebreaker at Modesto Muni on March 4. Ceres failed to even the score at Creekside on Wednesday even though it posted an excellent score.

"We knew they were going to be tough at their place," Mendonca said. "They have been shooting under 190 quite a bit. We're just not capable of doing that yet."

Johansen edged Ceres 188 to 197.

"The kids played good," Mendonca said. "That's one of the best scores they have shot in league all year."

The Vikings improved to 9-2 in the CCC.

The Bulldogs fell to 6-5 in league.

Wilcox shot an even-par 36 for Ceres. He had one birdie, seven pars and one bogey.

Martinez shot 37. Jantz and Bobby McFarlane both shot 41. Warn shot a six-over-par 42

"Bobby had his best score of the year," Mendonca said.

Four of Johansen's players shot in the 30s.

Michael Merritt shot an even-par 36. Jeff Thompson and Chris Mason both shot 37. Ryan Cole and Ryan Roepke shot 38 and 40, respectively.

Ceres 211, GV 244

The Bulldogs beat the Cougars by 33 strokes, 211 to 244, at Merced Country Club on Tuesday, March 30.

Ceres improved to 6-4 in the Central California Conference standings.

Golden Valley fell to 1-9 in league.

Wilcox shot a 3-over-par 39 for the Bulldogs. Warn and Adam Dusi shot 41 and 43, respectively. Martinez and McFarlane both shot 44.

Will Fructl shot a 45 for the Cougars. Justin Zellar and Luke Via both shot 48. Kirk McMillin and Leonard Russell shot 50 and 53, respectively.

League standings

With the end of the regular season less than a month away, Ceres must win out and do well at the CCC championships to accomplish a goal that it set at the beginning of the year. The Bulldogs are shooting for a top three finish in the CCC.
