Ceres High teammates face off in exhibition

Ceres High School's wrestling program staged its intersquad scrimmage on Wednesday at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

The White squad won 10 of the 18 contested matches.

"It was really competitive," said senior lightweight Wesley Schwieger, who accounted for one of the Red team's eight victories.

The final match of the night pitted the Bulldogs' top grapplers: Schwieger and sophomore Gabriel Balderas.

"I'm always nervous when I wrestle him," Wesley said. "He's a solid wrestler."

Ruben Sanchez, Gabriel Solis, Bradly Buton, Ethan Cefre, Christian Alvarado, Daniel Soriano, Anthony Cleveland, Connor Joseph and Ricky Garcia collected individual wins for the White team.

Sanchez, Solis, Buton and Cefre won by first-round pin against Jesus Maximiliano (0:28), Anthony Robbins (1:15), Dustin Palecek (1:18) and Kevin Ramirez (1:22).

Alvarado won by second-round pin (2:28) against Lucas Silva.

Soriano won by third-round pin (4:30) against Moses Gomez.

Cleveland won by third-round pin (4:58) against Javier Velasco.

Joseph won by major decision (12-3) against Dylan Van Wagoner.

Garcia edged Manuel Hernandez in overtime (11-9).

Schwieger, Alyssa Sanchez, Nick Serratos, Ritchie Solis, Armando Morales, David Cisneros, Brandon Christeson, Joey Bettencourt and Andrew Cefre led the Red squad.

Sanchez, Solis, Serratos, Morales and Cisneros pinned Crystal Duran (1:04), Eric Garcia (1:18), Matt Miranda (1:28), Jacob Williams (2:23) and Austin Moore (2:55).

Christeson won by technical fall (20-5) against Nick Santibanez.

Bettencourt won by major decision (14-6) against Navjot Singh.

Cefre won by decision (16-9) against Raj Singh

"It was a great night," Bulldogs head coach Jon Nowicki said. "All the kids wrestled tough. I tried to get everybody a competitive match."
